The military has been called in after ‘more than 20 bombs’ were found by builders.

Police rushed to the scene at the former Maxwell Street School following a call reporting the concerning discovery earlier this morning (Friday).

It’s understood a number of World War Two ordnance were located by builders working on the building in Maxwell Street.

A further number of possible explosive devices located by bomb disposal expert after their arrival.

A 100-metre cordon is in place – affecting Maxwell Street, Lorne Street and Tennyson Street. The routes are closed to both motorists and pedestrians.

Despite reports, Faringdon Road remains open to all traffic. Wiltshire Police is asking people to avoid the area.

The bomb disposal unit is en route – and is expected to arrive later this afternoon. The area could remain closed for several hours.
