Police have launched an investigation after a car was ‘shot at’ in Swindon.

The lone-female driver was travelling along Kingshill Road at around 1.15am on Saturday morning (6 August) when her vehicle was hit by an unknown missile.

The object, which hit the car when it was moving at low speed towards a red traffic light, caused a small bullseye-style smash to her windscreen, which cracked outwards. There was was no other traffic passing at the time.

The victim believes she was shot at by a firearm – possibly a high-powered air rifle. She believes what struck her windscreen was a metal ball bearing or similar.

The incident was reported to Wiltshire Police and the force reportedly sent officers to search the area for any suspicious persons but nobody was located.

The victim believes the police did not prioritise her report, despite promoting their additional commitments to protecting women and girls from harm. She claims the control room operator said it was “not a priority”.

Talking to Wiltshire 999s, she said: “The police are constantly shouting about doing more to protect women and girls but when a woman driving along through town in the night is targeted with some sort of weapon, they fail to act.”

“I’m confident that the person used some form of firearm — probably an air rifle. The bullet could have smashed straight through my windscreen and injured me. Luckily it struck the side of my windscreen not the centre.”

Wiltshire Police confirmed that they made contact with the woman today (10 August) and are investigating the report.
