A Swindon man has been airlifted to hospital after he was electrocuted in his garden.

Emergency services were called to the incident between Bembridge Close and Whitbourne Avenue at around 9.30am this morning (3 June).

Wiltshire Air Ambulance and Thames Valley Air Ambulance were tasked alongside local ambulance crews and two ambulance service Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) units from Bristol.

The man, carrying out DIY, was drilling in his front garden when he struck an underground mains cable – and was electrocuted as a result. He’s believed to have suffered a cardiac arrest.

The drill could be seen charred in the casualty’s garden

However, Wiltshire 999s understands he is alive and has been airlifted to Southmead Hospital in Bristol by Thames Valley Air Ambulance.

The incident sparked a local electricity outage, which is being worked on by the electric company.

Wiltshire Police was also in attendance to provide assistance, leaving the scene shortly after midday.

The fire service remains on scene, supporting the electrical engineers.
