The council has launched an investigation after a barber painted a protected building bright yellow.

The vacant unit in Market Place, Chippenham, was leased by a barber in recent weeks – but residents have been left angry and worried by his paintwork.

Bright yellow paint has been applied to the front of the building and the surrounding brickwork, despite it being a Grade II list building in a protected conservation area.

Not only has the building turned yellow, but the standard of the paint job has been ridiculed. A photograph shows yellow and black blobs of paint on the pavement too.

Chippenham mayor Liz Alstrom confirmed that Wiltshire Council is investigating the incident.

She said: “The building is in a conservation area and there are strict guidelines as to what can and cannot be done to the exterior and interior of a listed building.

“I have been in touch with a Building Conservation Officer at Wiltshire Council – this case is live with the Planning Enforcement team at present.

“The assessing officer has been advised of the concerns raised by colleagues within the conservation team.”
