A teenage boy who died when he was struck by a train in Wiltshire has been named locally.
Trowbridge Rugby Football Club have paid tribute to Devon Banfield, who joined the club as a young boy, following his tragic passing on Saturday (30 April).
Emergency services, including Wiltshire Air Ambulance, attended the railway line near Westbury at around 3pm following reports of a train striking a person.
Sadly, 16-year-old Lavington School pupil Devon was pronounced dead at the scene. Wiltshire 999s understands that his death is being treated as suicide.
Wiltshire Council said it is “working closely with the school and our partners to provide support to any pupils and staff affected” by his death.
The spokesperson added: “We’re very sorry to hear of this tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family and friends at this difficult time.”
In a statement, Trowbridge Rugby Football Club confirmed Devon’s death in a heartfelt post, describing him as “loyal” and “dedicated”.
“It is with the heaviest of hearts that we at Trowbridge RFC must share the news of the devastating loss of Devon Banfield, of our U16 squad.
“Having joined as a little rugger, Devon continued through the ranks with his tight-knit team and coaches all the way up to U16s.
“Devon is the kind of lad everyone wants on their team. Loyal, dedicated, willing to challenge any player on the pitch in the fiercest of tackles and not afraid to run anyone down for the ball, the best friend to all, a caring teammate, and just the most genuinely wonderful young man you could ever be lucky enough to meet.
“At this time of immeasurable sadness, we extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to Devon’s parents, siblings and extended family, and they remain in our thoughts.
“We also extend our sympathies to Devon’s U16 teammates and coaches here at the club, and thank everyone for their continued support of the boys at this time.
“We will love and remember you always. Our Devon. Our Super 7.”
