More details about an attack on two paramedics in Swindon have been revealed.

It comes at Wiltshire Police confirms the location of the incident – which saw two South Western Ambulance Service staff injured – and the gender of the suspect involved.

An experienced and long-serving paramedic was knocked unconscious by a patient on Tuesday evening (29 March). As a result, he is said to have sustained a broken eye socket.

His colleague, a third-year student paramedic, was forced to fight off the attacker whilst trying to contact the police for urgent assistance.

The force has confirmed that the incident took place on a cycle path near Great Western Way at about 6.30pm, and the attacker was female.

In a statement, they said the ambulance crew’s injuries were “not life threatening or life changing”.

The woman was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker. She has since been released under investigation as police continued to probe the assault.

In a message sent to South Western Ambulance Service staff, the county commander Paul Birkett-Wendes labelled the pair a “credit to our service” following the attack. Read his full statement here.

He claims the attack was caught on the paramedics’ body-worm camera – a piece of kit all Wiltshire ambulance crew members are now issued.
