An injured biker was taken to hospital in the boot of a car due to a lack of ambulances.

Numerous members of the public stopped to provide first aid to a man who came off his motorbike in Thames Avenue on Tuesday evening (29 March).

South Western Ambulance Service was called about the incident but the Good Samaritans were told that no ambulances were immediately available to attend.

Paramedics were reportedly tasked with a ‘more serious’ road traffic collision at the time.

After waiting more than two hours on the floor, the biker – who suffered a suspect broken ankle and fibula – was put in the boot of a car and rushed to Great Western Hospital.

In a statement, Wiltshire Police said: “At around 4.50pm last night (29/03) we were called to a single-vehicle road traffic collision on Thames Avenue, Swindon.

“It involved a motorcycle and the male rider was taken to hospital with a suspected leg injury.

“The road was clear around 7.20pm.”
