A Wiltshire man who crashed his Land Rover into a police car whilst drink driving has been banned from the roads.

Francis Saunders, 54, pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle whilst over the alcohol limit at Swindon Magistrates’ Court yesterday (1 December).

The defendant, of Greatfield, Royal Wootton Bassett, was involved in the crash on the B4042 at Brinkworth on on Wednesday 27 October.

A black Land Rover, driven by the defendant, collided with the side of a marked police car. Whilst no one was injured in the incident, a police car sustained significant damage.

The court heard that Saunders was arrested at the scene before providing a evidential breath sample in custody of 68 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

He was banned from driving for 20 months, but this will be reduced if he completes a drink-drive rehabilitation course. He must also pay a fine of £416 and a £34 victim surcharge.

If you are suspicious of someone driving dangerously or under the influence of alcohol or drugs, then call 101 and give as much information as possible, including the driver’s details or description and their car registration.

If you believe that a crime is being committed and somebody is already behind the wheel then please call 999.
