A burst water pipe may have caused a serious crash on the A4 near Marlborough.

Emergency services were called to a two-vehicle road traffic collision on the main route at Clatford shortly before 9am on Thursday morning (4 November).

Three people suffered injuries in the incident – believed to have been caused by a burst water pipe.

One of the vehicles involved was towing a boat at the time and is thought to have flipped in the crash, though nobody was trapped in any of the vehicles.

Whilst the nature of their injuries have not been confirmed by officials, it’s understood one of those involved suffered serious head injuries and remains in hospital.

The A4 was closed between Beckhampton and Marlborough for around six hours.

A spokesperson for Thames Water said it is “working with police to establish what happened”, but couldn’t comment on any details of the collision at this time.

The firm confirmed the incident was causing disruption to some water supplies in Wiltshire, mainly affecting the customers in the SN8 and SN4 postcodes.

Thames Water has also been using tankers to pump water into the local network and keep customers in supply, whilst work is ongoing to fix the damaged pipe.

The spokesperson continued: ““We’re sorry to anyone suffering disruption due to a damaged 7-inch diameter water pipe on the Bath Road near Clatford.

“Our engineers are on site and have been working hard to reroute the network and get all customers back in to supply before starting a repair.

“We’ve also identified everyone in the affected area who has pre-registered with us as having special requirements, such as being medically reliant on water, so we can provide any additional support they need, such as bottled water.”

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said one fire crew from Marlborough attended the incident.

After providing casualty care and making the scare safe for less and one hour, the fire service was stood down.

Wiltshire Police refused to provide a detailed statement about the incident.
