A vulnerable young woman has been rescued from a river in Calne.

Emergency services were called to what is believed to be a mental health incident in the centre of town at around 5pm this evening (14 October).

Fire crews from Devizes and a specialist water rescue unit from Trowbridge attended the scene in the area of Castlefields Canal and River Park off New Road.

A woman was seen in the water wrapped in a medical blanket, with a number of 999 personnel alongside her ahead of firefighters bringing her to safety.

Talking to Wiltshire 999s at the scene, a local told of how they believe the woman ‘jumped into the river and suffered serious injuries’ as a result.

They claimed the casualty was seen to be’ put on a stretcher and loaded into the ambulance’ before being taken to hospital for further treatment.

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they rescued a “vulnerable young adult” from water, stating: “We wish them a speedy recovery.”

Wiltshire Police reportedly had three units at the scene.

Emergency services had stood down from the incident by 6.30pm.
