16 electric scooter riders have been stopped by police officers in Chippenham.

Wiltshire Police says it has seen a rise in complaints about the speedy scooters, which are currently illegal to ride in public places, and is now taking action.

Officers have been out in the community cracking down on riders who continue to flout the motor vehicle laws, with more than a dozen riders stopped in recent days and weeks.

Despite trials taking place as close a Bath, it remains illegal to use electric scooters anywhere in Wiltshire as there are no active government-approved providers operating in the county.

The force says its officers in Chippenham have stopped 16 riders “rise in complaints regarding them”. As a result, 15 warning letters were issued and one scooter was seized.

“Officers will continue to take action against persistent offenders and we ask that people make themselves aware of the rules and laws surrounding E-Scooters before they purchase them”, a spokesperson said.

They added: “To summarise, it is currently against the law to use an E-Scooter in a public place. This includes on the road, pavement or parks.

“An exception of this rule are the rentable E-Scooters in places such as Bristol or Bath. These are legal due to them requiring a license to be used and they are also insured by the company.
