Man accused of knocking friend with cerebral palsy unconscious in fight

A man has appeared in court accused of knocking his disabled friend unconscious in Salisbury on Thursday evening.

Duncan Chaney, 41, was arrested when police responded to 999 calls reporting a disorder breaking out between two males at Cheese Market in Market Square at around 8.20pm.

Crown prosecutor Keith Ballinger said members of the public, including some children, were witness to the serious incident – some left distressed by the attack.

It’s alleged the defendant, of John Baker House, was with six other men when he and another one of the males became violent towards each other.

Chaney is said to have repeatedly punched the man – who has cerebral palsy and uses crutches – before kicking him in the head after he fell to the floor.

The victim was knocked unconscious as a result of the alleged assault.

Richard Griffiths, defending, said the injured party threw the first punch and his client defended himself – albeit excessively.

Chaney gave no indication of plea to charges of affray and assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH).

Magistrates declined jurisdiction, adjourning the case to Swindon Crown Court in July.

He was remanded in custody.
