A man awaiting sentencing for assaulting an emergency worker was arrested for attacking a police officer on Saturday, a court heard.

Chippenham man James Lait, 22, this morning at Salisbury Magistrates’ Court pleaded guilty to breaching a restraining order and assaulting PC Todd on 8 May, just eight days prior to his crown court sentencing hearing for a similar offence.

Crown prosecutor Ryan Seneviratne said the defendant, who is currently residing with his girlfriend in Brooklands, Brinkworth, went to his mother’s property in Goldney Avenue – an address he is prohibited from attending due to a restraining order.

Police officers were called to the scene and arrested Lait for the breach.

During his detention, he became violent and punched PC Todd in the face. The officer was left bloodied having suffered a split lip.

Having been convicted of assaulting a police officer earlier this year, he is awaiting sentencing at Swindon Crown Court on 14 May.

On hearing this case would also be committed to the crown court for sentencing alongside his previous conviction, defence solicitor William Griffiths only added that the assault was a “single punch in the heat of the moment”, adding “it is what it is your worships”.
