Avon and Somerset Police has released a statement on today’s incident in Trowbridge.

A force spokesperson said: “At approximately 8.05am this morning (Sun 11 Apr), officers were called to a residential property in the Crofton Park area of Yeovil, following reports of an assault. No injuries have been reported.

“Officers sought to detain a man in connection with the incident, but he left the scene by car after assaulting a police officer.

“Shortly afterwards a firearm was found unattended nearby and safely recovered by trained officers ahead of examination.

“Arrest attempts subsequently continued with assistance from National Police Air Service and colleagues in Wiltshire.

“This afternoon a 34-year-old man was arrested by Wiltshire Police in Trowbridge and taken into custody, where he will be transferred to Avon and Somerset. He’s been arrested on suspicion of a number of offences, including possession of a firearm in a public place, assault, escape from lawful custody and assaulting a police officer.

“Officers have been on patrol in the Yeovil area conducting house-to-house enquiries and high-visibility patrols.

“Witnesses who have not yet spoken to police can call 101 and give reference number 5221076981.”

Wiltshire Police also confirmed they arrested a 38-year-old man from Trowbridge in connection with the incident. He is in custody at Melksham.
