A stern warning has been issued after two incidents on Salisbury Plain.

The military has raised concerns about people’s conduct whilst out walking on their land, some of which is open to the public.

The warning was posted on social media after a dog was hit and killed by a military vehicle just weeks after a walker was struck by another vehicle in the vast training area.

A spokesperson for the Military of Defence wrote: “Dogs must always be under control. Not only is it an offence, it is sad for the owners (and the driver) when incidents like yesterday happen.

“All too often, our staff are forced to wait on the main routes when owners are frantically trying to recall their dogs that are clearly not under control.

“Also, we are at the start of nesting bird season, so as per the Countryside Code, dogs should be on a lead anyway; we mark out areas conducive to the birds’ preferences, but they can and do nest anywhere.

“There seems to be a prevalence at the moment of people running or cycling along the middle of the main tracks wearing earphones; oblivious to the traffic behind them.

“This is also dangerous as was demonstrated a few weeks ago when a person out walking was hit by a vehicle. Thankfully, no-one was seriously injured.”
