The Latest Travel Rules: What They Mean for Tourists

Outside of patients, travellers and the travel business in general have probably been the most affected by the COVID crisis. However, the UK is starting to ease itself out of the lockdown and lower some of its restrictions. This means that travellers can look forward to tourism opening back.

However, you still have to know these rules to know what you can and can’t do, where you should and shouldn’t travel, what to expect when you get to these destinations, and how to prepare for the trip. Let’s take a look at what the new travel rules mean for tourists.

The Tier System

The new rules are set to be in effect by December 2nd. At that time, a tier system will be introduced that will be based on the level of infestation in the area.

People living in a Tier 1 or medium risk area will be allowed to travel in and out of the UK with minimal restriction. However, they will be advised to refrain from visiting Tier 3 areas as much as possible. They will need to follow Tier 2 rules for indoor gatherings and no more than six people are allowed. Restaurants are open with table service up to 11pm.

People in Tier 2 zones will also be allowed to travel in and out of the UK with no restrictions. Unnecessary travel to higher risk zones is not recommended, but will not be penalised. You will only be allowed to congregate outside; however, that doesn’t apply to support bubbles. Restaurants and pubs that serve substantial meals will be allowed to open up to 11pm as well.

People in Tier 3 zones will not be able to travel without a specific reason. That is both within the country and abroad. Restaurants that don’t offer take out are closed. Penalties will also be given to people who violate travel restrictions.

Travel Insurance is a Must

Whatever the case may be, you will need to invest in some travel insurance if you intend to leave the country. You also have to make sure that it covers against any interruptions caused by the coronavirus.

One great example of an insurer that offers great packages for people travelling during the COVID crisis is Staysure. They will include COVID coverage at no extra charge with your policy, and this goes even if you have a pre-existing condition. It will cover you for both medical costs abroad, but also if you have to deal with cancellations because of new restrictions.

Do I Have to Quarantine Myself Once I Get Home?

In many cases, yes. However, there are some countries that have been removed from the quarantine rules. At the time of writing, this includes countries like Italy, Antigua and Barbuda, and Spain, among others. However, you have to know that these restrictions can be changed at any time, sometimes at a few hours’ notice. So, you will need to be in touch with the news wherever you are and make sure that your consulate or embassy’s contact information is on hand in case there are any issues.

Also know that some countries will allow you to only visit some areas without quarantining on either side. When it comes to Greece, for instance, this only applies for the islands of Crete, Corfu, Zakynthos, Rhodes, and Kos. So, you will need to do some more research into each destination before you decide to leave.

The new coronavirus rules mean that there will be less restrictions on travellers. These can be complicated, however, so you have to be thoroughly prepared and pick safe destinations whenever possible.
