The Health and Safety Executive has launched an investigation after a man was seriously injured by a steel beam at a COVID-19 vaccine centre in Swindon.
The 32-year-old construction worker was hit by a falling girder at the Thermo Fisher Scientific site in Covingham shortly before 2pm on Saturday afternoon.
The firm is working to create a bespoke Pfizer distribution centre with 350 freezers capable of holding the vaccine at -70C. It arrives in the UK next month.
Thames Valley Air Ambulance attended the scene, with the crushed casualty being transported to a Regional Major Trauma Centre for urgent treatment.
A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “We attended the Patheon Building, Kingfisher Drive in Covingham, Swindon following a report that at 1.50pm [on Saturday] a 32-year-old male employee had been struck by a falling piece of steel.
“The man suffered serious injuries as a result and the circumstances are now subject to investigation by the Health and Safety Executive.”
“We were called on Saturday at 12.46pm to attend an incident on Kingfisher Drive, Swindon”, a spokesperson for South West Ambulance Service told Wiltshire 999s.
“We treated an injured male patient at the scene, and transported him to hospital by land for further care.”
