Two teenage boys found carrying weapons in the Swindon area were arrested over the week as police continue proactive ‘knife crime patrols’ across the town.

A 14-year-old boy was discovered in possession of a zombie knife (a large knife with serrated edges to inflict incomprehensible damage) was arrested near the Link Centre fun fair on Saturday evening. It was found during a stop and search of a group of males riding bicycles.

Last night (Sunday), officers attended the play park off Gilman Close in St Andrew’s Ridge where a 15-year-old was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon – namely a hammer.

The weapon was found in a rucksack that was discarded along with cannabis. The was also arrested for possession of Class B drugs and affray. He’s since been released under investigation.

At the same park in August, a 17-year-old boy was stabbed during a large disorder.

In another area, officers seized a vehicle after a routine traffic stop discovered the driver was driving without a valid licence and located class A and B drugs hidden in bushes that have been seized.

Two CCTV cameras were also damaged during an arson attack on two lampposts playing host to them in Beech Avenue last night (Sunday). Officers searched for the suspect but couldn’t locate him.

Acting Inspector Georgina Romani, of the Stratton, Central North and West Swindon Community Policing Team, said: “It was another busy and positive weekend of activity as we continue to target those intent on causing harm to our community

“These patrols are not only seeing tangible results but also helping us build a comprehensive intelligence picture that will help us tackle this issue.

“One major concern to us is the ages of some of the individuals involved. We are working with the local schools and our other partners to try and address this.

“I’d like to reaffirm that carrying a weapon is a criminal offence and knife crime has a catastrophic impact and can ruin lives. We will continue a robust approach to these incidents and continue to patrol the areas, not just at weekends but throughout the week.

“As always, we rely on the support of the community, who have been fantastic. If you have any information regarding this type of illegal activity in your area, call us on 101. Alternatively, if you feel more comfortable leaving information anonymously, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
