A cyclist was threatened with a blade in Salisbury city centre yesterday afternoon.

Police were called to the scene in New Canal, on the junction with High Street, Bridge Street and Silver Street, at around 5.20pm.

Officers investigating the incident was appealing for help in tracing a Good Samaritan who came to the aid of the cyclist following the attack.

It is believed that a verbal altercation took place before the cyclist was threatened with a blade of some kind. The cyclist suffered minor injuries as he fell trying to get away, and the suspect then left in the direction of The Cheese Market.

Officers were called and carried out a search of the local area, making an arrest a short time later. A weapon was also located in bushes near the Maltings car park.

A 24-year-old man from Salisbury was arrested on suspicion of assault by beating, possession of an offensive weapon and criminal damage. He is currently in custody at Melksham Police Station.

PCSO Gareth James, from Salisbury Area Community Policing Team, said: “Fortunately, this appears to be an isolated incident, however, the victim injured himself trying to get away from what appears to be an unprovoked attack.

“We would like to speak to anyone who may have been in the vicinity of High Street, Bridge Street and Silver Street at the time of the alleged assault.

“In particular, we would like to speak to a man in a green t-shirt who came to the aid of the cyclist.”

Call police on 101 and quote crime reference number 54200070002. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
