Two police officers were injured after being shot with a catapult by a suspect this morning.

The man, who is understood to have already been on bail in relation to a serious assault on a police officer, failed to stop for officers in the south of Wiltshire at around 10am today.

Following a pursuit, the man dumped the  stolen Land Rover Discovery in Stonehenge Road, Amesbury, and fled on foot, using a catapult to fire missiles at officers and a police dog who were chasing him.

Despite being shot at, Police Dog Elvis managed to get to the suspect and detain him.

A 21-year-old woman – who was arrested almost immediately after the car stopped – from the Salisbury area was arrested on suspicion of stealing a vehicle and taking it without consent.

A 33-year-old man from the Salisbury area was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer, attempted GBH, drug driving, failing to stop and stealing a vehicle.

Two officers were injured by the catapult in the incident, one in the head and one in the chest. Both officers and Police Dog Elvis were not seriously hurt and have returned to duty.

The police helicopter was also overhead, following the pursuit from the sky.
