A lamb was killed in a dog attack on farmland in Highworth on Tuesday evening.

Police officers were called to the incident at around 6pm yesterday following the horrific killing of the animal by an unknown breed of dog which was allowed off its lead in the area.

The owner of the dog stayed at the scene and spoke to the farmer, apologising for the dog’s actions.

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: “Officers attended and spoke to the owner to give words of advice about livestock worrying and keeping dogs on leads around sheep.

“No further police action is required.

“Our advice to dog owners is that if your dog chases livestock in such a way as may be reasonably expected to cause injury or suffering then we would advise you to keep your dog on a lead or under close control when close by, or in a field with livestock.”

Farmers have the right to shoot and kill dogs which are found to be worrying or attacking livestock.
