Three police officers were injured whilst attending a pub in Swindon last night following reports that there were people inside despite the Coronavirus Act preventing them from opening.

Wiltshire Police were called to the Deers Leap in Penhill at approximately 11.25pm following concerns that there were a number of people inside breaching the Covid-19 restrictions.

When they gained entry, a group of people were located inside who claimed to live at the pub. Whilst officers were making enquiries, a disorder took place which resulted in three officers being attacked.

A woman in her 50s was arrested on suspicion of three counts of assaulting a police officer and is currently in custody in Gablecross.

Five Fixed Penalty Notices were also issued to people inside the pub who were failing to adhere to the current Covid-19 restrictions.

Superintendent Phil Staynings said: “This was completely unacceptable behaviour – three officers assaulted whilst going about their duties to ensure the public are keeping safe and adhering to the Government restrictions.

“Fortunately, none of them were seriously injured however they did suffer some pain and discomfort as a result of the incident.

“It is really disappointing to hear that not only are people flouting the rules at this time of great uncertainty but a complete disregard is being shown for our officers.”
