Blaze destroys vehicle just days after people warned to stop bonfires during pandemic

Three days after the local fire service asked people not to undertake bonfires, firefighters have this morning battled a serious blaze at a farm in east Wiltshire.

Three fire crews from Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service were sent to the site at around 8.30am, following reports that a bonfire had spread to logs and a vehicle in high winds.

The fire destroyed a large vehicle, thought to be a tractor and damaged the outside of a barn.

Yesterday evening firefighters across the county were called to four garden fires within the first 90 minutes of their shift, despite facing operational pressure as a result of COVID-19.

The fire service are asking people to “avoid having unnecessary fires” on their land.

A spokesperson said: “[We’re] asking all land managers to not undertake prescribed or controlled burns unless it is absolutely necessary to minimise the potential for wildfires.

“Please help us as we deal with additional pressures and challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.”
