Man says his preaching is “essential” as he hosts illegal public gathering

A preacher defied new laws in place to help prevent the spread of coronavirus today, as he took to Swindon town centre to share his religious views with members of the public.

Despite the government bringing in emergency legislation to stop people from making unnecessary trips out, the street evangelist – who refused to provide his name to Wiltshire 999s – said he felt it was “essential” share his beliefs in Canal Walk and talk to people who wished to hear more about his beliefs.

Public gathers of more than two people who are not from the same household are banned, but the preacher ignored this and all social distancing advice by playing host to two men. All three have been confirmed as being unknown to one another before today.

When asked about his outing and whether he believed it was essential, he said he had been in the town centre for an hour and also been to a local store where he had collected a DVD.

Talking to Wiltshire 999s, the preacher said: “I know there’s a limited to gatherings but I wasn’t quite clear on the law; I wasn’t sure of the number. If I ask someone a question and they respond, we can have a conversation. I am using this period where many people are free.

“We are living in prophetic times; this is the time the bible talked about – there will be diseases and pestilences. We are having diseases and pestilences worldwide now and the nations are rising against nations, according to  Matthew 24:7 in the bible.

“When I was talking, there was social distancing. I was keeping two metres away from them.”

The unnamed man said he believes his preaching was “essential”, and added that he thinks it is “important” to tell people about his beliefs and the gospel.

The Prime Minister closed all places of worship while we lock down to fight COVID-19.

In a statement released by Wiltshire Police today, they said: “Some members of our Community are putting us all at risk by continuing to go outside of their homes and engaging in normal activities.”
