‘Don’t ask customers to call 999 if stuck in floods’, breakdown firms warned

A fire service manager has asked breakdown firms to stop telling customers to call 999 unnecessarily.

The request comes after companies like the AA, RAC and Green Flag have advised some Wiltshire customers to contact Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue after becoming stuck in floods.

Station Manager for Salisbury, Wilton and Amesbury, Matthew Maggs took to Twitter to ask the ‘fantastic recovery companies’ to stop call centre operators from giving the wrong advice.

In his message, he said the service will only respond to cars stuck in flood water ‘if there is a risk to life’, and communication centres ‘should not advise callers to phone them’.

A request @TheAA_UK @TheRAC_UK @GreenFlagUK and the many other fantastic recovery companies. Please can your communication centres not advise callers to phone the fire service to recover cars stuck in flood water. We will only assist if there is a risk to life. Thanks all

He tagged the AA, the RAC and Green Flag in his tweet; we’ve approached them for comment.
