Community fire station vandalised leaving glass strewn everywhere

A community fire station manned by only on-call firefighters has been vandalised overnight.

On returning from a welfare check on an elderly man at 4am this morning, a firefighter returned to the Fairford station to discover several glass bottles smashed on the forecourt.

But that wasn’t the only damage. A window had also been smashed, sending thousands of shards of glass across the gym and specialist water rescue equipment.

A spokesperson for Fairford Commnity Fire and Rescue Station, located just over the Wiltshire border in Gloucestershire, said: “Unfortunately he [a firefighter] discovered that several glass bottles of wine and beer had been smashed outside the fire appliance door.

“This means that any responding crew and the fire engine would have to drive/run through broken glass. Clearly this endangers the crew responding to any emergency and our ability to turn out quickly.

“In addition a wine bottle has been used to smash a window at the station showering our gym and water rescue kit with broken glass. This means firefighters trying to dress in a hurry for a water rescue incident would be doing so on a floor covered with broken glass.”

Anyone with information relating to this incident is asked to contact the police by calling 101 and quoting incident number 95 of today’s date (15 September 2019).
