Armed police officers and dog units were called into the Penhill area of Swindon this afternoon following reports of a youth gang carrying weapons.

Dozens of police units were called to the estate, alongside the police helicopter which hovered overhead for around 40 minutes, at just before 4pm today.

The response appeared to be centred around Corsham Road and Fyfield Avenue area.

Reports on social media say the gang were armed with metal poles.

POLICE UNITS IN THE PENHILL AREA THIS AFTERNOON

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “From around 3.45pm today (21 October 2018) we received a number of reports from members of the public expressing concerns about a group of youths in Penhill, Swindon, who were said to be carrying weapons.

“Due to the nature of the reports, officers, including armed officers and dog units, are currently at the scene and carrying out searches and patrols.

“We would like to reassure the public that there is likely to be a police presence in and around Penhill this afternoon and into this evening and we will provide updates in due course.

“Anyone who has information is asked to call Wiltshire Police on 101, quoting log 192 of today.”
