Two Wiltshire men have been arrested after police were met with hostility following a protest linked to a small boat crossing the English Channel.
Police and other agencies, including the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and Border Security Command, responded to reports of a small boat crossing the Channel on Tuesday (22 September).
Members of the public who had been following the vessel’s activity gathered in Gosport and Portsmouth to protest.
Officers were deployed to both areas to facilitate peaceful protest, protect the local community and support partner agencies in the event of an emergency at sea.
Police said that after news emerged that the vessel would dock elsewhere in the country, a group remained in Gosport.
Some members of the group then became hostile towards officers, according to police. Six people were arrested in total.
Two men, aged 19 and 36 and from Salisbury, were arrested on suspicion of aggravated trespass.
A 67-year-old man from Gosport was arrested on suspicion of careless driving and assaulting an emergency worker.
Two women, aged 31 and 32, and a 33-year-old man, all from Gosport, were arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker.
