Wiltshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner has renewed his commitment to tackling hare coursing following a court hearing into an incident near Tidworth.

One defendant pleaded not guilty and was released on unconditional bail ahead of a trial. Charges against six other defendants were discontinued by the Crown Prosecution Service.

The case was also mentioned in Wiltshire Police Chief Constable Catherine Roper’s latest fortnightly letter to Police and Crime Commissioner Philip Wilkinson.

Mr Wilkinson said hare coursing continues to have a serious impact on rural communities across Wiltshire and Swindon.

Police and Crime Commissioner Philip Wilkinson said: “Many people living and working in our rural communities continue to experience, first-hand, the damage and distress that hare coursing causes to farmland, livelihoods and community safety.

“Hare coursing is far from a victimless crime. Beyond the damage caused to land, crops and property, it can leave farmers, landowners and rural residents feeling frightened, intimidated and unsafe.

“It remains one of the issues most frequently raised with me by those living and working across our countryside, reflecting the significant impact it has on rural communities.

“Tackling rural crime remains one of my key priorities as Police and Crime Commissioner.

“I will continue to support proactive policing activity and work alongside farmers, landowners and partner agencies to deter hare coursing, disrupt those suspected of being involved and ensure every available opportunity is taken to protect our rural communities and ensure justice is delivered through the criminal justice system.”
