Emergency services raced to the Wain Homes housing development Widham Gardens in Station Road, Purton, at around 11.05am this morning (Thursday).

A man, aged in his 20s, sustained life-threatening injuries after being stabbed with a screwdriver. It’s believed he suffered wounds to his head.

Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance were deployed, with critical care medics providing urgent treatment alongside two ambulance crews.

The casualty was subsequently flown to the Major Trauma Centre at Southmead Hospital in Bristol for further care.

The suspect is understood to have fled the scene following the attack. A 36-year-old man, who is known to the victim, has since been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Another 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. They have been taken into custody for questioning.

DCI Deb Hatch said: “This is a serious incident which has left a man fighting for his life in hospital. His family have been informed and are thoughts are with them at this difficult time.

“I can confirm that we have arrested two people in connection with the incident and we are not currently looking for anybody else.

“I’d like to reassure the community that this is believed to be a targeted, isolated incident and there is no wider threat to the public.

“There will be an increased policing presence in the area in the coming hours and days.

“If you witnessed what happened and we haven’t spoken with you, or you have any concerns, please come forward and speak with one of our officers.”

Information can also be left through 101, via the Wiltshire Police website or anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
