A Trowbridge man has been jailed after attacking a woman and being found in possession of a drug.
Jason Prior, 41, was sentenced at Swindon Magistrates’ Court on Monday after being found guilty of assault by beating following an incident in Bythesea Road.
The court heard that Prior assaulted a woman during the evening of 2 June.
He denied the offence but was convicted and sentenced to 23 weeks in prison – a term approaching the maximum sentence available to the magistrates.
Prior, of Trowbridge, was also convicted of possessing 20 grams of cannabis. He received a further two-week prison sentence for that offence, to run concurrently.
A restraining order has also been imposed, preventing him from contacting the victim.
PC Emma Hensberg said: “I would like to thank the victim in this case for her bravery in helping to bring the perpetrator to justice, which may help protect others from suffering similar abuse.
“If you are unsure about a person you or someone else is in a relationship with, and feel they could be at risk of domestic abuse please be aware of Clare’s Law.
“This allows the police to release information about any previous history of violence or abuse – this helps us protect potential victims and prevent further crimes.”
