A man has been arrested in Wiltshire after four emergency helicopters were sent to a fatal crash on the A46 near Bath.

Emergency services were called to a two-car road traffic collision Gloucester Road, just north of Upper Swainswick, shortly after 3pm on Saturday afternoon (11 July).

The incident involved a white Dacia and a black Range Rover, with the occupants of the Dacia sustaining serious injuries.

Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance (WBAA), Devon Air Ambulance, the HM Coastguard and a National Police Air Service helicopter were scrambled.

The driver of the Dacia sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to the Major Trauma Centre at Southmead Hospital. He was later pronounced dead.

“Our thoughts are with his family who are being supported by a specially trained family liaison officer”, an Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson said.

A woman and a child, who were both passengers in the car, remain in hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

The Range Rover involved failed to stop at the scene, prompting urgent searches.

A man, aged in his 20s, was arrested in Wiltshire some hours after the horror smash.

He was taken into custody on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has since been released on conditional bail while the investigation continues.

The force spokesperson added: “The road was closed while emergency services responded and to allow initial investigations to take place at the scene. It has since reopened.

“Anyone who witnessed the collision and has not yet spoken to an officer is urged to contact us.

“Officers are also keen to hear from anyone who has dashcam footage of a black Range Rover travelling westbound on the M4 or southbound on the A46 on the afternoon of Saturday 11 July.

“If you can help please call 101, giving the call handler the reference number 5226192720.”
