Police are urging people not to swim in a lake near Warminster after reports of groups of young people entering the water during the heatwave.

Officers from Wiltshire Police said they had received reports of a number of youths swimming in the lake at Fonthill Bishop near Warminster as temperatures soared last week.

The force is reminding the public of the dangers of swimming in open water, particularly during periods of extreme heat. Risks include cold water shock, cramping and the possibility of drowning.

Police also warned that blue-green algae is currently present in the lake.

They said the algae has developed because of the amount of goose droppings in the water and poses a potential health risk to anyone who enters it.

While acknowledging that the lake may appear inviting in the hot weather, officers are urging people to think carefully about the dangers before entering the water.

Anyone who witnesses an water emergency should call 999 immediately.
