The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is urging parents to ensure their children are fully vaccinated against measles following a rise in cases across England.

According to the agency, 106 measles cases have been reported in England in the past two weeks alone. Two child deaths have also been confirmed this year

Health officials warned that measles spreads very easily and can lead to serious complications. In some cases, the illness can be fatal. Most cases involved children under 10.

In a statement, UKHSA said: “With 106 measles cases reported across England in the past two weeks alone, it’s vital to recognise how the illness presents.

“Measles spreads very easily and can lead to serious complications, and tragically in some cases can be fatal.”

The agency is encouraging parents to check that their children are up to date with their MMR or MMRV vaccinations.

It added: “We urge all parents to ensure their children are up to date with their MMR or MMRV vaccines, giving them the best and safest protection against measles.”

Anyone who has missed their measles vaccinations can arrange a catch-up appointment through their GP practice.

UKHSA is also advising anyone who suspects they or their child may have measles to contact their GP practice by telephone or seek advice from NHS 111.

The agency said: “If you think you or your child has measles, speak to your GP practice over the phone, or contact NHS 111.”
