Amid the heatwave, dozens of people had reportedly been in the water at Donnington Bridge on Wednesday (27 May).

A 14-year-old boy is said to have got into difficulty, before disappearing.

Emergency services mounted a major search operation, with the National Police Air Service Helicopter deployed. Dozens of 999 vehicles lined the bridge.

He was subsequently found deceased and recovered from the river.

In a statement today (Thursday), a spokesperson for Thames Valley Police said: “We are sad to confirm a boy died after getting into difficulty in the River Thames at Donnington Bridge yesterday.

“The 14-year-old boy’s family have been informed and offered support; our thoughts are with them at this extremely difficult time.

“The death is being treated as unexplained but not suspicious and our investigation is ongoing.”
