A Swindon town centre shop has been ordered to close for three months following an investigation into the sale of illicit tobacco.

Police officers attended the Lavy Store in Commercial Road on Thursday 19 March after reports of suspicious activity at the premises.

Two men were arrested on suspicion of Section 92 Trade Marks Act offences in connection with the alleged selling and possession of counterfeit tobacco and cigarettes.

Police seized a quantity of suspected counterfeit goods along with a significant amount of cash.

Today (Friday), officers attended Swindon Magistrates Court where a full closure order was granted. The order means the premises must remain closed for three months.

PC Paul Bezzant said: “Had the items which we seized been genuine, they would have had a retail value of more than £21,000.

“I’m pleased the closure order was successfully obtained at court today – it means the premises is closed until at least July and anyone caught inside the premises may be committing an offence.

“We will continue to patrol the area and ensure the order is being adhered to.

“It is crucial the public continue to report concerns regarding suspected counterfeit goods so we can use all relevant powers to take the most appropriate action to stop this type of illegal activity.”

Police have warned that anyone found inside the shop while the closure order is in force could be committing an offence. Officers say patrols will continue in the area to ensure compliance.

Anyone with concerns about suspected counterfeit goods is urged to contact police.
