The RSPCA says it is ‘devastated’ by the death of a racehorse at at the 2026 Cheltenham Festival – marking the 20th fatality of the year.

Eight-year-old Hansard, trained by Gary and Josh Moore, sustained a fatal injury during the Arkle Chase on Tuesday (10 March).

A statement from Cheltenham Racecourse confirmed the horse was injured while running on the flat.

It read: “While running on the flat in the second race of the day, Hansard sustained a fatal injury. He was quickly dismounted and immediately attended to by a team of expert veterinary professionals.

“In their assessment, it was concluded that the best course of action for the horse’s welfare was for him to be put down and our heartfelt condolences are with his connections.”

Commenting on the incident, an RSPCA spokesperson said the charity was “devastated” by the Hansard’s death.

“This is the 20th fatality linked to competitive horseracing in the UK this year alone – and it is only March.

“Lessons must be learned from any tragedy like this – around the contributing factors, pre- and mid-race decision-making, and means of prevention.

“We will continue to liaise with the British Horseracing Authority in an effort to see greater safety measures introduced to the sport, and improvements for equine welfare both on and off the track.”
