A product sold on Amazon has been recalled over the risk of fatal strangulation.

The ORTONES Wheelchair and Geriatric Armchair Lap Belt has been withdrawn from the UK market following concerns raised by the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS).

The support belt, model number D2100, is designed for use with wheelchairs, geriatric chairs or armchairs.

Authorities warn that vulnerable users may slide down in their seat while restrained by the belt, causing it to move and potentially constrict the neck.

This could lead to serious injury or death from positional asphyxiation or strangulation, particularly when unsupervised.

The OPSS said the belt does not comply with the General Product Safety Regulations 2005, a post by Wiltshire Council Trading Standards said.

A corrective action has been taken by the manufacturer, which includes withdrawing the product from sale and updating the instruction manual to highlight the risks.

The manufacturer is advising current owners to only use the belt under the supervision or prescription of a healthcare professional or specialist technician.

They have also warned that the product is not suitable for individuals without good upper body control or those with respiratory or cardiac conditions. Medical advice should be sought before use in these cases.

The OPSS is urging people who use similar products to make sure they are used safely and correctly, and only in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidance.
