Four people, including two children, have been arrested following a high-speed pursuit through Swindon just before midnight last night.

Police officers spotted a silver Peugeot 106 being driven through a red light on the stretch of road in North Swindon at approximately 11.25pm.

The vehicle then accelerated rapidly away from the police vehicle, reaching speeds of 80mph in a 40mph zone. When officers then attempted to stop the vehicle in Moredon Road, it made off again and a pursuit was authorised.

During the pursuit, the vehicle passed through red lights, travelled at excess speed and went the wrong way around Greenbridge roundabout and the Moredon Road/Akers Way roundabout.

Officers were able to stop the vehicle in Mead Way near to Peatmoor Lagoon – four people decamped but were detained nearby.

A 21-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of failing to stop, dangerous driving and theft of a vehicle.

Two 15-year-old boys and a 19-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent. All four are from Swindon and they remain in custody at Gablecross while enquiries continue.

Sergeant Neil Bott said: “During the pursuit across Swindon, the vehicle was driven extremely dangerously, putting not just those inside the vehicle in danger, but all other road users and pedestrians.

“It is extremely fortunate that due to the actions of those involved, nobody was injured as a result.

“The pursuit was concluded by the safe use of tactical contact with the suspect vehicle and the specialist driver training police officers receive.
