A man has been arrested in connection with a machete attack in Swindon where a woman suffered a life-changing hand injury.

Officers investigating the serious assault in Shalbourne Close, Penhill, on Sunday night have carried out detailed enquiries, including responding to information and intelligence from the community, and subsequently executed a warrant at a house in Beech Avenue this morning.

They attended the address shortly after 6am and a 19-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent and conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm. He is currently in custody at Gablecross Police Station.

A weapon was also seized during the warrant.

The victim, a woman in her 40s, has since been discharged from hospital.

Detective Inspector Paul Hacker, from Swindon CID, said: “Our enquiries into this incident are continuing and we have been carrying out a detailed and thorough investigation over the past few days.

“We would continue to urge anyone with information about the attack to come forward and speak to police – your call can be in confidence and will be treated with discretion.”

Inspector Carly Nesbitt, from Swindon Community Policing Team, said: “I know there will have been concern amongst the local community following Sunday night’s incident and I hope today’s arrest provides reassurance that we will listen to the information and intelligence coming into us, and we will take strong action to apprehend suspects and help keep the public safe.”

Anyone with information should call Swindon CID on 101, quoting crime reference 54200079266. Alternatively you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
