A Swindon school has cancelled all detentions for the rest of the week as soaring temperatures are set to hit Wiltshire.

Dorcan Academy said the decision was made following continued monitoring of weather forecasts and guidance from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

The school has also announced it will close early on Friday (10 July), with pupils finishing at 1.00pm after following an adjusted timetable of five shortened lessons. Additional learning activities will be set for completion at home.

In a message to parents and carers, the school said: “Following continued monitoring of weather forecasts and guidance from the UK Health Security Agency, we have made the decision to cancel all detentions for the remainder of this week.

“Due to forecast high temperatures, school will also close early on Friday at 1.00pm.

“Students will follow an adjusted timetable with five shortened lessons, and additional learning activities will be set for completion at home.

“Please ensure your child brings water, applies sunscreen before school and uses shaded areas during breaks. Thank you for your continued support.”

The move comes as the UKHSA has issued an amber heat-health alert for the South West, warning that high temperatures could increase health risks, particularly for vulnerable people.

Dr Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at UKHSA, said: “Sustained periods of warm weather can result in serious negative health outcomes across the population, so it is important that everyone takes sensible precautions while enjoying the sun.

“Based on the current forecast, we don’t currently expect the health impacts to be as high as the heatwave we saw at the end of June but older adults and those with pre-existing conditions are still at risk.”

He said: “If you have friends, family, or neighbours who are more vulnerable, it is important to check in on them and ensure they are aware of the forecast and are following the necessary advice.

“Simple steps such as staying hydrated, avoiding the sun during the hottest part of the day, and keeping your home cool are effective ways to help keep yourself and others safe during periods of hot weather.”
